A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT: Another Spring Production Update

April 25, 2022

Hello Bay Players!

After a series of upheavals we’ve already faced this Spring (Oslo, then not Oslo, then Misery) it’s with great reluctance that I have one more to announce.

Following a creative leadership change for Misery after rehearsals had begun, and then a cast member family issue, we found ourselves even further behind schedule (and frankly, behind the 8-ball) with our May 20 opening date looming large. All Board members, me included, expressed concern about where we were in the process of the show, and the onslaught of technical and rehearsal challenges we faced in the coming weeks necessitated the Board to have a frank conversation about the realities of successfully pulling off such a daunting production. We determined that by playing catch-up and being spread too thin, the quality of the show would suffer — and after two wildly critically successful shows this season, that wasn’t a risk we were willing to bear. A gangbusters production of Misery is well within our capabilities, but it needs more time, more staff, and more consistency than we can give it in the truncated window we have remaining. And so the Board made the determination that, in the best interest of the company, Misery will be postponed to next season.

Twists and turns are great when it comes to storytelling, but when you’re trying to put on the kind of high-quality show our audiences are used to? Let me tell you, not so much. I know this is disappointing news, and I and the rest of the Board apologize for this unfortunate turn of events. But it was not a decision made lightly. There’s no blame to place here, just a long sequence of challenging circumstances that will allow us to learn and grow.

We will replace Misery with something requiring a lower time commitment and fewer technical needs (readings, a renewed focus on workshops, a few one acts, etc.). This replacement will be discussed at the Bay Players meeting on Wednesday, April 27th, and we will have an open discussion of options. I invite everyone to send me ideas of what they think would be fun and exciting, because the show must (and will) go on!

Thanks all,
James Koonce
President, The Bay Payers

A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT: Spring Updates

March 22, 2022

Hello Bay Players!

Well, folks, it pains me more than I can say, but our previously announced spring show, OSLO, will not be moving forward this season. Theatre is always the sum of an immeasurable amount of moving parts, and I still believe in the play and its timely potential — and of course our talented creative team — so never fear, we’ll revisit it in the future.

But! BUT! All is not lost! In its place I’m thrilled to announce MISERY, the Stephen King thriller adapted by Academy Award winner William Goldman and directed by Sheila Kelleher, fresh off her dazzling comic performance as Mortimer in THE FANTASTICKS. This chilling classic tale of a novelist’s desperate attempts to escape his number one fan starts with a bang and continues full of twists, turns and mounting suspense to the very end — you won’t want to miss it!

Show dates are May 20, 21, 22, 27 and 28. More to come!

Oh, you’re not done yet! While I have you, let me also introduce the first in our series of actor education opportunities: Audition Tips & Techniques, led by Theresa Chiasson, also fresh off of THE FANTASTICKS (that cast was just an embarrassment of riches, I’m not gonna lie):

  • Want to make the most of a cold read when you don’t know the script?
  • Ever NOT been cast, and you’re not sure what a director is looking for?
  • Need to nail a character really, REALLY fast?

Join us for this hands-on session with a veteran director who’ll tell you what’s what. Whether you’re just starting out or a longtime performer with multiple credits to your name, you’ll get something out of this. Bring your resume and headshot (and if you don’t have one, yes, you really need to get one — Theresa will explain it to you), and come armed with a question you’ve always wanted to ask at an audition… come on, we all know you’ve got one. Stay tuned for more info — I’ll send a follow-up email with a mid-April date and time.

Thanks all, and as always, we’re one community — together we stand!

James Koonce
President, Bay Players

THE SHOW MUST GO ON!

February 25, 2022

Tonight’s (Friday, February 25th 2022) performance of THE FANTASTICKS is still on! We look forward to seeing everyone at the show. 🙂

However, if you are concerned about driving and you have a reservation for tonight or purchased tickets online for tonight’s show, we would be happy to move you to the performance on Saturday, February 26th at 8pm instead (if you would like to do this, please send us an email to bayplayers@gmail.com with your reservation name and we will make the adjustment through our box office). We don’t want anyone feeling unsafe!

WINTER STORM: Friday, February 25th

February 24, 2022

If you have either a reservation, or have purchased tickets online through Brown Paper Tickets, for the performance of THE FANTASTICKS this Friday, February 25th, and are concerned about the weather, please know we are monitoring the storm and keeping current on all predictions. Forecasts have Duxbury on a line where it could be snow or it could be a wintry mix (or even rain/sleet if the storm moves a hair north). We could see accumulation ranges anywhere from 2” to 8”. Experts predict that we will see a significant impact to morning commutes on Friday, but the precipitation south of the Mass Pike should be plowable and manageable come late morning.

Any decision to cancel the Friday night performance would not be made until midday Friday. However, even if the show is still on but you have any concerns about safety or would just prefer not to drive on the roads in the evening, we would be happy to change your reservation or purchased tickets to the performance on Saturday evening at 8pm instead (if you would like to do this, please send us an email to bayplayers@gmail.com with your reservation name and we will make the adjustment through our box office). We don’t want anyone feeling unsafe!

We will continue to update our social media, website, and email autoreply with new information as we have it. We appreciate your flexibility and patience as we adapt to this developing situation.
