The Story

A 1939 hit for the British playwright once nicknamed “The Master,” this farce is among the most shameless, liveliest, self-addressed valentines in theater history. The plot concerns a dashing, internationally acclaimed playwright, actor and songwriter, Gary Essendine, whose plans to leave on an African tour are complicated by romantic intrigue in his close circle. Just before he escapes to Africa, the full extent of his misdemeanors is discovered and all hell breaks loose. Present Laughter premiered in the early years of the Second World War just as such privileged lives were threatened with fundamental social change.
